TRUSSES 101

The Industry
Roof and floor trusses and wall panels are classified as ''Structural Building Components.'' In 2006 across the U.S. this included 2,000 companies with an accumulated business of $15 billion. Metal-Plate-Connected Wood Trusses account for 85% of roof framing in the Northwest and approximately 20% of floor framing. And both these numbers are growing. There must be a reason.

Framing the American Dream
American Dream

In 1996, at the National Association of Home Builder's Show, two identical homes were framed, one conventionally using dimensional lumber, and one using Structural Building Components. Some exciting information was captured:

Conventional
Framing
SBC
Framing
Savings
Man Hours to Erect 401 148 253
Bd Feet of Lumber Used 20,400 15,100 5,300
Yards of Site Scrap and Waste 17 4 13
Cost of all labor, materials, and equipment $21,373 $18,017 $3,356
Total Savings (labor and material) 16%

16% less expensive, roughly 1/3 the time, and 25% less total wood.

There's our answer why Structural Building Components are so popular in this day and age of rising costs, compressed timelines, and environmental awareness. Click the picture above to view the complete ''Framing the American Dream'' report by WTCA (Wood Truss Council of America).
